One of Boston’s most admired television executives, S. James “Jim” Coppersmith is most remembered for his twelve years as leader of WCVB/Channel 5 where he served as Vice President and General Manager (1982 to 1989) and President and GM (1990 to 1994).

James “Jim” Coppersmith is most remembered for his twelve years as leader of WCVB/Channel 5 where he served as Vice President and General Manager (1982 to 1989) and President and General Manager (1990 to 1994). Under his leadership, local programming series such as Chronicle were developed and nurtured, news programming excelled, WCVB won two of its six coveted George Foster Peabody Awards, several Gabriel Awards, as outstanding station in America, as well as more Boston/New England Emmy Awards than any other Boston TV station. Earlier, from 1973- 1977, Jim was VP and General Manager of Boston’s WNAC-TV, now WHDH-TV. Active in public service, Jim received the Boston Chamber of Commerce’s highest award when he was named a “Grand Bostonian.” He was chosen “Man of the Year” in 1976 by the Greater Boston Association for Retarded Citizens, served as President of the New England Broadcasting Association, is past Chairman of the Board of Emerson College, and former Chairman of the Mayor’s Committee on Urban Arts in Boston. Currently, Jim is Vice Chairman of the Boston-based public relations and marketing company Rasky Baerlein Strategic Communications. He holds honorary degrees from Emerson College, Northeastern University and William Penn College.
