Sunny Joe White

Sunny Joe White set the pace for the transformation of disco to Urban Contemporary radio. He served both as a charismatic announcer and a visionary program director, leading WXKS-FM from “worst to first” in Boston.”

As one of the most popular personality disc jockeys of the 1980s, Sunny Joe White's influence extended far beyond Boston. He was a legendary announcer and innovative programmer who made the danceable form of top-40 called "Urban Contemporary" popular, as he led Kiss-108 FM to ratings dominance in the Boston market. Soon, stations across the country were emulating what White was doing in Boston.

He had an ear for the hits with many of the songs he picked becoming popular nationwide. To this day, the Urban Contemporary format owes much of its success to White.
